What is the Japan International Ballet Festival?

  • The Japan International Ballet Festival is an international competition held in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture since 2019.
  • The festival features competitions, scholarship auditions, workshops, and a gala concert.
  • Participants from overseas are welcome, and many dancers from around the world take part.
  • We offer numerous scholarships to prestigious ballet schools.
Competition
  • Top-level judges selected from around the world conduct fair and impartial evaluations.
  • All judges’ scores and detailed evaluation items are published on each participant’s My Page, ensuring transparency.
  • We offer a total prize fund of JPY 2,000,000. Selected participants will receive prize money ranging from JPY 100,000 to JPY 300,000 each as training support funds.
  • Dancers aged 5 to 29 may compete in classical ballet, jazz dance, contemporary dance, and character dance.
  • During the competition period, participants may take master classes directly from renowned dancers and judges.
  • On the final day, a gala concert is held featuring invited distinguished dancers.
Scholarship Audition
  • The Japan International Ballet Festival offers many opportunities to support young talent.
  • Scholarships include opportunities to study at international ballet schools, join ballet companies, receive tuition waivers, and gain eligibility to participate in overseas competitions and festivals.
  • Scholarships are awarded based on evaluations from both the audition and the competition.

Workshop
  • A six-day workshop offering lessons in classical ballet, character dance, and contemporary dance taught primarily by current instructors from prestigious international ballet schools, as well as world-renowned dancers.
  • This workshop is very popular, with many repeat participants, and often reaches a waiting list.
  • Open to dancers aged 9 to 29.
  • A performance recital will be held on the final day, where participants will present what they have learned on stage.

About the Competition

Advice Division classical ballet solo

  •  No rankings are given, making this division ideal for first-time competitors or those returning after a break.
  •  A designated variation is used, so no music submission is required.

Solo category

For classical ballet solo
  • Participants who are in the 6th grade or above and pass the first round can take the second round (Enchaînement).
  • Participants in the 5th grade and above can apply to perform in the Gala Concert Grand Finale.
  • A designated variation is used, so no music submission is required.
For jazz dance, character dance, and contemporary dance
  • Please submit your music.
For contemporary dance repertoire
  • No music submission is required.

Pas de Deux / Ensemble Division

  • Pas de deux: 2–3 dancers.
  • Ensemble: 2–16 dancers.
  • Music submission is required for both.

Our festival features workshops and competitions in English, led by renowned international teachers. English-speaking staff are available to assist you.

Entry Guidance for Overseas Participants

A few key points for our overseas participants:

1. Use Browser Translation

If the registration page is in Japanese, use your browser’s built-in translation feature.

  • On PC: Right-click anywhere and select “Translate to English”
  • On Mobile (Chrome): Tap the “⋮” or “•••” menu and choose “Translate”
    We recommend using Google Chrome for best results.

2. About “Furigana” or “Hiragana” Fields

Some forms may show a field labeled “Furigana” or “Hiragana”.
If you're not sure what to enter, just copy and paste the following:
👉 カイガイ
Use exactly 4 Japanese characters, with no space.
✅ This is perfectly acceptable. We will follow up and make corrections if necessary.

Entry Instructions

To enter, you will need to complete two steps:
“Group Registration” and “My Page Creation”.

STEP 1: Group Registration (for representatives only)

Who should complete this step:

  • First-time participants (representatives)
  • Those creating a new group or studio

Register as a representative of your group (ballet studio or individual entry).
Once the group registration is complete, you will be able to create My Pages for participants.

STEP 2: My Page Creation (for each participant)

Who should complete this step:

  • Those who have completed Group Registration

Each participant must create their own My Page.
Please proceed with registration from the link below.

Note:

For Pas de Deux and Ensemble categories, please submit entries from your Group My Page.

This festival takes over the “Ballet Workshop in Nara” and “Ballet Competition in Nara” with 16 years history in Nara Prefecture. Through our partnership with the world famous ballet schools and academies, we have welcomed the teachers of the school as the judges and trainers. We have been contributing to send many students to outside of Japan and develop excellent ballet dancers. This time, we have newly opened a more international competition, workshop, gala concert with various ballet schools’ artistic directors and teachers including Mr. Vladimir Malakhov.
